Environmental Protection Agency Pushed to Prohibit Application of Antimicrobial Drugs on American Agricultural Produce Amid Superbug Concerns

A newly filed formal request from a dozen public health and agricultural labor organizations is urging the US environmental regulator to discontinue allowing the application of antimicrobial agents on food crops across the America, pointing to antibiotic-resistant proliferation and health risks to farm laborers.

Agricultural Sector Applies Millions of Pounds of Antibiotic Pesticides

The farming industry applies approximately substantial volumes of antimicrobial and fungicidal treatments on American produce annually, with a number of these substances banned in international markets.

“Annually US citizens are at increased danger from dangerous bacteria and illnesses because pharmaceutical drugs are used on plants,” said Nathan Donley.

Antibiotic Resistance Presents Significant Health Risks

The overuse of antimicrobial drugs, which are essential for addressing infections, as pesticides on crops threatens population health because it can cause antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Similarly, frequent use of antifungal pesticides can create mycoses that are harder to treat with currently available medical drugs.

  • Antibiotic-resistant illnesses sicken about 2.8 million individuals and cause about thousands of deaths each year.
  • Health agencies have connected “clinically significant antibiotics” approved for crop application to drug resistance, greater chance of bacterial illnesses and increased risk of MRSA.

Ecological and Health Consequences

Additionally, consuming drug traces on food can alter the human gut microbiome and increase the chance of chronic diseases. These agents also pollute drinking water supplies, and are believed to harm pollinators. Frequently economically disadvantaged and Hispanic field workers are most at risk.

Frequently Used Agricultural Antimicrobials and Industry Methods

Farms apply antibiotics because they destroy pathogens that can harm or kill plants. Among the popular antimicrobial treatments is a medical drug, which is often used in clinical treatment. Data indicate approximately 125k lbs have been applied on US crops in a single year.

Agricultural Sector Influence and Regulatory Action

The formal request coincides with the regulator experiences urging to widen the application of pharmaceutical drugs. The citrus plant illness, spread by the insect pest, is destroying citrus orchards in Florida.

“I understand their critical situation because they’re in difficult circumstances, but from a societal point of view this is absolutely a clear decision – it cannot happen,” the expert stated. “The key point is the enormous problems caused by spraying medical drugs on produce far outweigh the farming challenges.”

Alternative Methods and Future Outlook

Specialists recommend simple farming measures that should be tested first, such as planting crops further apart, cultivating more hardy strains of plants and identifying diseased trees and quickly removing them to prevent the infections from spreading.

The petition gives the EPA about half a decade to respond. In the past, the regulator banned a chemical in response to a parallel regulatory appeal, but a judge reversed the EPA’s ban.

The agency can implement a prohibition, or has to give a justification why it refuses to. If the regulator, or a later leadership, declines to take action, then the groups can file a lawsuit. The process could take over ten years.

“We are engaged in the extended strategy,” the advocate stated.
