At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
